Their wording that I saw (which may have been updated since I saw it) used the term 'anonymized' data, hence why I couched what I was saying with that term. But open-source apps is already better and "safer" than most. How is that a bad thing?īut yeah PIA definitely needs to go through an audit, but I saw a post here that said it's gonna be early 2022. From what I remember (I wasn't with pia at the time but I was shopping around quite a bit) they were leaning hard on the "protect your data over wifi" angle which isn't really relevant now, so it seems like they're shifting the tone to be more accurate. What tone shift did you notice? Generally companies go through various iterations to find their voice and messaging. Those have a (putting it mildly) less-than-stellar record as far as not keeping records and promising not to sell your information (even anonymized information) to the highest bidder.Ĭyberghost has a history of recording and selling data? Now PIA is owned by a new company that also own Cyberghost and other VPNs. But I am no longer convinced PIA is "safe" for me. I don't want to leave PIA because I don't want to go through the hassle of reconfiguring my devices for a new VPN. Citing the court cases from years ago does not matter anymore at this point since that was before their new acquisition. That being said, my term is almost up and I need someone to convince me that my information isn't going to be sold off (even anonymized) and that, if an alphabet representative came knocking, there would be no logs to give them. I've also noticed a shift in tone with this company over the last few years, particularly in the marketing, cementing my view of PIA as a wholly different animal than when I first signed up. Those have a (putting it mildly) less-than-stellar record as far as not keeping records and promising not to sell your information (even anonymized information) to the highest bidder. Now PIA is owned by a new company that also owns Cyberghost and other VPNs. Since there was demonstrable evidence, I was certain PIA was safe and for me. There was a documented legal case (defending against the FBI) where there were no logs to retrieve.

In other words, I didn't have to rely just on the promises of a corporation. I originally got PIA because it was one of the only ones out there with a legal record of actually having no logs. Safe is a loaded word, so let me clarify.
